Arne Slot Asserts He Is Safe and Has Liverpool's Backing After PSV Eindhoven Defeat
The Liverpool head coach acknowledged that it's understandable for doubts to be raised about his position following another convincing loss versus PSV Eindhoven.
Liverpool suffered their 9th defeat in twelve matches, representing the team's worst streak since being demoted in 1953-54.
They were taken apart by the Eredivisie title holders on a tough night at Anfield.
“I feel secure, I'm fine, I've received plenty of backing from management,” the coach stated.
“It would be nice to turn it around and get a victory obviously but if you are working as a coach and underperforming then it's typical that people question you.”
He continued, “I accept my position. This isn't the first time I've found myself in a tough spot but it's crucial that we changed our fortunes.”
Discussions with Liverpool Hierarchy
When asked to elaborate on his dialogues with the Liverpool hierarchy, Slot explained:
“There's regular dialogue. They are helpful for the squad and for me and we discuss these matters but they don’t call me all the time of the day to say they trust me.”
He mentioned, “During our regular exchanges I sense the confidence. However I haven’t spoken to them after this defeat yet so let’s see.”
Persistent Problems and Player Response
The manager expressed regret over recurring weaknesses from his Liverpool side in their Champions League defeat, namely missed opportunities and leaking goals.
Meanwhile, player Curtis Jones was blunter in his view of the team's situation.
“I don’t have the answers. Frankly, I do not. I’m saying that to all,” Jones remarked.
“It is unacceptable. I don’t even need to wait to think about it. I'm beyond being angry internally. I’m at the point now where I just don’t have the phrases.”
He added, “It's difficult because I play for the club I love. I'm a supporter, and I’ve seen Liverpool for years.”
“In recent memory, I haven’t experienced a Liverpool team experiencing a phase like this with performances so bad.”
He concluded, “However we continue to wear that badge on our chest. And until that badge is taken away, we'll continue to compete.”
“We’re going to try to help the side return to the top, demonstrate to all once more what Liverpool stands for and why it's known as the greatest side in the world.”
“At this moment, things are bad and we have to turn it around.”
