Israelis have assembled throughout the country to remember the second anniversary since the Hamas-conducted offensive on October 7th, 2023, as talks advanced in Egypt over a resolution to the conflict in Gaza.

The incident resulted in over 1,200 people dead and 251 others abducted back to Gaza as captives. It was the single most lethal day for Jews since the Second World War.

Israel answered by initiating a armed campaign in Gaza which has claimed over 67,000 people, based on figures from the area's Hamas-run health ministry. Its figures are considered accurate by the United Nations and other global organizations.

"Our aggressive adversaries have struck forcefully, but they have not overcome us," the prime minister added on that day.

He also promised to "accomplish all the aims of the war: the homecoming of all the abducted, the destruction of the Hamas regime and the guarantee that Gaza will no longer present a danger to Israel".

Remembrance Gatherings Across Israel

The Israeli government postponed official remembrance events until mid-October - after the conclusion of the festive season - but ceremonies still were held across the country on that day.

A remembrance service for the relatives of Israelis killed in the Hamas attack was organized in the coastal city. Put together by the affected families, it was televised across Israeli TV networks.

Some time earlier, a moment of silence was observed across the country.

Ceasefire Meetings in Egypt

Meanwhile, Israeli and Hamas representatives convened in the North African tourist destination of Sharm el-Sheikh for a second day of indirect talks to discuss the terms of the agreement.

A senior Palestinian official knowledgeable about the talks said that an night meeting of negotiations started at 7 PM local time.

The representative stated the morning session ended without concrete outcomes, because of conflicting views over the proposed Israeli retreat arrangements from Gaza and over guarantees Hamas demands to make certain Israel does not restart hostilities after the first phase of the deal.

He noted that the negotiations are "difficult and have yet to produce any real breakthrough," but pointed out that mediators are making efforts to reduce the disparities between the two sides.

Key Issues in Talks

  • An enduring ceasefire
  • The trade of the prisoners still held by Hamas for inmates from Gaza
  • The removal of military personnel from Gaza
  • Plans for humanitarian aid provision
  • Future management of the region

Public Feeling

In the city's public square earlier, 29-year-old a woman - whose sibling endured the incident on the gathering, where hundreds were killed and many more were abducted by Hamas militants - told: "Nowhere appears as home anymore and until each abducted person come back no one will be secure."

"When we see all home again, we can relax anew. Then we can commence heal," she continued.

Near Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu's home in Jerusalem, people gathered to show their solidarity for the families of the abducted. Israel says nearly fifty stay in confinement in Gaza, approximately twenty of whom are believed to be alive.

Activist a participant stated: "We must do whatever arrangement required for the hostages to be released. But we sincerely need promises that we will be protected."

Surveys now regularly indicate that about seventy percent of the population prefer the hostilities to conclude in as payment for the release of the captives.

Palestinian Circumstances

At the site of Nova festival, mourners assembled to pay their respects.

From that location, the boom of Israeli air strikes and explosions could be heard just a short distance away in Gaza, where witnesses reported the severe Israeli attacks carried on.

In the main city, attacks were noted in the dawn of Tuesday in the west side district, area and locality neighbourhoods and in the east side neighbourhood of the community, as well the camp to the north-west.

"When the evening falls, the dread comes with it," relocated urban resident a local woman, whose 17-year-old son was killed by an Israeli aerial attack earlier, explained.

"My family are afraid of the bombings. All the night we are resting together, embracing, particularly my little child who places his face on me the entire evening."

"Continuously we monitor the updates to see what happened. And I'm afraid that this truce will not be finalized and that the war will resume to us."

Humanitarian Situation

The healthcare center in the urban area reported it had taken in the bodies of half dozen people by the daytime, including a trio killed in an Israeli strike in the south part district.

A different healthcare center in the south region of that area indicated additional fatalities had been brought there. One of them was killed by Israeli troops while looking for help to the south, health workers reported.
