The Mayor-Elect affirms he will make his home in the iconic Gracie Mansion
NYC's next chief executive, Zohran Mamdani, has decided to live in the iconic Gracie Mansion, departing from the affordable apartment that was a central issue throughout his run for office.
A Traditional Abode
Built in 1799, Gracie Mansion has functioned as the mayoral home for nearly all New York City mayors after the post-war period.
Yet, Mamdani, for whom affordable housing is a core issue, hesitated to declare his residency plans immediately following his electoral win in November.
"My choice rested on keeping my family safe and the need to dedicating my full attention on carrying out the platform on affordability New Yorkers elected me on," the Mayor-Elect declared in a statement.
Leaving Astoria
Mamdani lived in the Astoria neighbourhood, an area famous for its diverse immigrant populations and culinary diversity.
"To Astoria: my gratitude for demonstrating the true spirit of New York City," he expressed.
"While I may no longer live in the neighborhood, the community will always live inside me and my work," he affirmed.
Political Debate
During his race for mayor, Mamdani connected his key pledge – a rent freeze – to his personal living arrangements.
But his opponents, mainly former New York Governor Andrew Cuomo, attacked Mamdani for occupying the affordable housing although he hails from a prominent family.
Previous Exceptions
Not all mayors have chosen to live at Gracie Mansion.
Michael Bloomberg, the billionaire entrepreneur, preferred to remain in his personal mansion on the Upper East Side throughout his time in office, which concluded in 2012.
Instead, Bloomberg argued it ought to be a space for official events, and pushed for significant upgrades of the aging mansion.
A Stately Residence
When Mamdani moves into Gracie Mansion sometime around his first day on 1 January, he will be surrounded by a setting far removed from his modest Astoria digs.
Adorned in butter yellow paint, forest green window covers, and pristine railings, Gracie Mansion is a wedding cake of a house situated by the East River.
Inside, the lower floor of the historically styled mansion is decorated in the spirit of the home's original era.
The estate, which reportedly has five bedrooms, also boasts fortified protections to safeguard the mayor and his family.
Supernatural Speculation
A number of people have alleged that Gracie Mansion also has ghostly inhabitants.
Chirlane McCray, the spouse of previous mayor Bill De Blasio, told reporters that doors would sometimes open and closing inexplicably, and the floorboards made strange noises.
Outgoing Mayor Eric Adams was even more convinced. "It doesn't matter what anyone says," he insisted in 2022. "The place is haunted in there, man."
A Critical Policy Issue
Mamdani's current apartment is rent-stabilized, a policy where the city regulates on how much landlords can hike the monthly cost each year.
New Yorkers view rent-stabilized housing as essential protections as the price of rent outpaces the means of many residents.
It was reported Mamdani his rent was $2,300 each month for his apartment.
Based on data from real estate analysts Zillow, the average rent for a one-bedroom apartment in New York City is $3,500 a month.
