The Mighty Nein's Introductory Sequence Selected the Wrong Critical Role Song
This latest animated series, the most recent animated series by the beloved role-playing group, revealed an exciting opening credits. It showcases our favorite cast of misfits, misfits, and rogues fighting hard and taking names, while teasing at several agonizing backstories for characters including Liam O'Brien's wizard Caleb, and another actor's warlock orc, Fjord.
Overall, the intro appears stunning. But I couldn't help feeling that an element was lost in the music selection.
The intro uses "Welcome to the Continent", a truly stellar composition created by producer and singer the talented musician. It's a track from the official score of the same name, the second release put out by the production company's music division Scanlan Shorthalt Music. It's a great sentimental choice, and I suspect that fans of the sequel series will love its inclusion.
But for me, The series' intro doesn't quite capture the hype and excitement that accompanied the second campaign's actual-play adventure. "Your Turn to Roll", composed by singer-songwriter Jason Charles Miller, was an instant classic for me when it was first revealed in 2015, and it improved further when co-founder Sam Riegel added lyrics to the melody for the series' animated intro in the later year.
Including singing from one actress, another performer, Travis Willingham, as well as Riegel himself, the track was catchy and enjoyable. At the time, I hadn't even watched the second campaign yet, but it was so infectious that I kept it on my device. It's a song that excites you before you dive into an installment of fantasy hijinks.
The Mighty Nein's intro with "the new song" fails to hit the right notes in my opinion. It's an impressive composition, but from what I know of the group, I can't help but feel that its mood is somewhat mismatched.
Naturally, the creators has already said that the series will have some surprises and differences from the actual-play campaign. A tonal change for its opening seems to be one of them.
This animated adventure will be available to watch on the streaming service from Nov. 19. For those eager before that, or wish to prepare to learn about the characters of the second series, the actual play are accessible on the audio platform and the video site.
