The network's Premier New Show of This Year Gets a Significant Renewal for Two More Seasons.
In October of last year, the late-night programming block welcomed back its quirky hit, Smiling Friends. But, not long after, the channel launched a brand-new animated series with a markedly softer tone. Haha, You Clowns was heartwarming and calm, reminiscent of a animated take of a serene talk show. In an era often marked by cynicism, this show's earnestness struck a chord and helped it become a breakout hit.
A Major Commitment
In mid-December, the network confirmed a big renewal: Haha, You Clowns has been greenlit for two more seasons. This gives creator Joe Cappa ample opportunity to further explore the world of the Campbell family. The show focuses on three polite teenage brothers whose primary trait is their strong bond for their single father, with Cappa portraying for all four main characters.
"I’m so grateful to the fans of the show who gave *Haha, You Clowns* a chance and shared it with others," said Cappa. "I am overjoyed that I get to hang out at the Campbell household for a little longer."
Executive Acclaim
Accompanying the news praise from Adult Swim president Michael Ouweleen, who described the series as "radically heartfelt and strangely uncanny." He specifically highlighted the fans who discovered the show and championed its uniquely offbeat appeal.
"All of you supported this new show, praised it on social media, and expanded its audience week over week so we could greenlight not one, but two more seasons," noted Ouweleen. "To quote: 'You are strong! You are loved!'"
A Wholesome Alternative
Upon its debut, Haha, You Clowns was described as "a gentle counterpart" to other adult animated fare. There’s something deeply soothing about watching this charming family navigate their simple existence.
At the time, creator Joe Cappa expressed his desire to help comedy break out of its prevailing layer of irony. He linked this trend to the rise of certain blockbuster franchises.
“We're stuck in a cycle of irony that we can't get ourselves out of,” said Cappa. “The attitude is that we have to know we’re the smartest person in the room when we're watching stuff. I feel like we've been doing this for 10 years, and we just have to laugh at something different now. Comedy has to evolve.”
Future Seasons
With this renewal, with Haha, You Clowns guaranteed to return, Cappa could potentially help usher in that change he described. At a minimum, the renewal promises audiences additional episodes to bask in the gentle humor of the unique Campbell clan.
The final episode of Season 1 of Haha, You Clowns is scheduled to air on December 21st. All episodes is ready to watch on HBO Max.
